Dia de los Muertos: The Liveliest of Celebrations

10/10/2015 –  11/14/2015

Sunday, Oct. 11, 2015: Day of the Dead workshops 1-4 p.m.; Reception 5-7 p.m.

For 29 years, the Bath House Cultural Center has presented its annual Día de los Muertos art exhibition. One of the longest-running Día de los Muertos events in the region, this exhibition of altars and contemporary art draws inspiration from the ancient Mexican tradition of the Day of the Dead. The annual autumn custom merges aspects of pre-Columbian ceremonial rites and the Catholic observance of All Saint’s Day. Throughout the years, this fascinating marriage of cultures and beliefs has given birth to a type of artistic imagery, styles and aesthetics that have been admired and embraced by artists from Mexico and, increasingly, from many parts of the world.

This year, the main focus of the Bath House exhibition is on the depiction of the festive side of the Day of the Dead. The show includes art by Chandra Armstead, Cynthia Armstrong, Robin Bachtler Cushman, Sissy Bingham, Dan Birlew, Penelope Bisbee, Angie Bolling, Amy Branch-Lambert, Tarran Caldwell, Hector Cantu, Paul Carranza, Gabrielle Castañeda Pruitt, Carlos Castellanos, Justin Clumpner, Cynthia Daniel, Dan Dudley, Lori Dudley, Brett Dyer, Ann Slate Gaspari, Kelly Giesecke, Cynthia Green, DJ Guerra, Melissa Hayes, George Wayne Hensley, Michael Hilden, Duke M.
